The Board of Governors of the Charles S. Roberts Awards is delighted to announce its nominating Committee for the Awards Year 2023. Once again, we wholeheartedly welcome aboard an array of distinguished voices in the tabletop wargaming space, some new to the Charlies, and others who have already proven themselves invaluable to our process.
Expect additional announcements in the coming weeks concerning our process changes for Awards Year 2023, as well as the makeup of the Wargaming Hall of Fame jury for 2023.
The members of the Charles S. Roberts Awards 2022 Nominating Committee are:
Cody Carlson, a.k.a. The Discriminating Gamer has reviewed games for a decade as The Discriminating Gamer on YouTube. He holds a PhD in Military History and currently teaches in Idaho.
Robert Carroll is a CSR Board Member, served as an intelligence officer with the CIA, and is the host of the YouTube channel KilroyWasHere, which itself has received multiple nominations for CSR Awards.
Liz Davidson covers solo games on her channel, Beyond Solitaire, and is also the host of the Beyond Solitaire podcast. She has a particular interest in historical games, particularly those that focus on ancient history. Outside of gaming, Liz is a high school Latin teacher and freelance Coptologist (expert in Coptic language). She holds a BA in Classical Studies from the University of Chicago and a PhD in Ancient Christianity from Yale University.
Steven Dolges is a working professional, experienced wargamer, and hosts an eponymous YouTube channel. His videos tend to focus on long-form session reports and game analysis.
Sean Druelinger is the developer of Nations at War 2.0, designer of the LnL Tactical Solo system, and designer of Point Blank V is for Victory.
Bruce Geryk may be better known in wargaming circles as SpaceRumsfeld, writer of the Wild Weasel blog, or co-host of the Three Moves Ahead podcast. He has also written for The Escapist and Computer Gaming World, among other outlets.
Brant Guillory is a US Army veteran, game designer and former head of BayonetGames, the current head of the Armchair Dragoons, and has over 40 years of wargaming experience, with 20 of them as a writer, designer, or reviewer.
Morgane Gouyon-Rety hails from France. She is the designer of the acclaimed Pendragon: The Fall of Roman Britain, which placed third in the 2017 Golden Geek Awards, as well as the upcoming Hubris: Twilight of the Hellenistic World, both from GMT Games.
Ryan Heilman is a CSR Board Member, game designer/developer, and CSR Award winner. His most recent release is The Struggle For Zorn: The Red Blight, co-designed with Hermann Luttmann and Fred Manzo, and available from Blue Panther.
Alexander Klein is one half of the world’s most popular wargaming YouTube Channel, The Players’ Aid. He is an avid player, reviewer, and analyst of wargames, as well as being known for his impeccable fashion sense.
Karl Kreder co-operates The Wargame Bootcamp, an initiative which seeks to introduce wargames to wider audiences at various events and conventions.
Michal Kowalczuk operates the blog and YouTube channel, The Boardgames Chronicle, where he focuses on historical games and topics.
Riccardo Masini has been a wargamer since the mid-80s, is the author of several essays about history and gaming, a regular game magazine contributor, and also host of the most followed Italian wargaming YouTube channel, WLOG.
Gary “Ardwulf” Mengle is the Director of the Charles S. Roberts Awards and hosts the YouTube channel Ardwulf’s Lair. He has been playing tabletop wargames since approximately 1980, and hearing himself talk about wargames is one of his favorite pastimes.
Scott Muldoon has spent almost 50 years thinking about games more than he plays them. He is a game designer (Cataclysm, Bitskrieg, et al.) and Japanese-to-English game translator (Warriors of England, A Victory Awaits, et al.). He has also managed to avoid starting his own podcast, despite enormous cultural and demographic pressure.
Nate “The Gimpy Gamer” Rogers is a CSR Award Nominee, and served 8 years in the USMC, including 2 tours in Iraq for Operation Enduring Freedom. On his second tour, he was wounded, which is where his moniker “Gimpy” came from for his YouTube Channel, The Gimpy Gamer. His channel has covered all manner of games for 7 years, but focusing on solitaire wargames.
Jose Ruiz, perhaps better known as Stuka Joe, is the Dean of YouTube wargaming. His masterful playthroughs and incredible production values have elevated the entire wargaming space.
